Walking Under the Water, Sipping Tea with Dreams...Ideas from Mother Henna

Creating Art Sparks...ideas from Kara L.C. Jones aka MotherHenna

Celestial_vault_crop_forcol_2 There is a poetry exercise from one of Shelley Tucker's books that talks about using a list of "nature" nouns matched with "human" verbs to jump start your writing.  I like to use this exercise to jump start my visual art-making also.

First I try to find elements outside that could be used in art, "nature" nouns.  Things like fallen leaves, pieces of moss, bird feathers, sticks, sea shells, rocks, etc.  Sometimes I will scan these items and then colorize those elements to make a certain palette if I'm leaning that way.

Then I try to come up with a list of "human" verbs like reading, running, drinking, crying, eating.  And I think about visual elements that could represent these.  Drawings or cut outs or stickers of books, shoes, cups, teapots, plates, faces, etc.

Sometimes I'll write up a quick couple of lines to just start my vision going:
I was walking under the water, I was sipping tea with dreams...

That kind of thing.  And then I gather up all the visual elements, some kind of blank canvas, an adhesive or two, some watercolor crayons, and my favorite PITT pens.  And I set about creating.  And then Iayer and layer and layer till it feels right.  I've recently begun doing this kind of layering on the computer using my digital drawing tablet and PS, too.  As long as I let go of trying to "make it right" and instead lean into the play and experimentation, then almost always I come up with something I like.

Try it yourself.  How do words and visual elements blend for you?  Are there simple poetry prompts that can actually be used to prompt your visual art?  Just spend a day playing and see what happen!

The Stuff of Art
I'm sharing these links because I often come across people who want to know where I get my packing sleeves or the paper for my cards or silk for my scarves, etc.  These are things I gladly share.  But I make a point of sharing this kind of info in places like this because I've also had moments where I asked another artist where they get their "stuff" and they don't like it.  They get sorta scared or stingy or something -- like there isn't enough room in the world for all of us.  You know, scarcity mind instead of abundance mind.  Anyway, so here's some of my key sources

http://clearbags.com - for sleeves, boards, mats, packaging options

http://dharmatrading.com - great source for the longish silk scarves, Jones Tones stuff and more

http://www.redrivercatalog.com - love their papers and they do "green" recycled!

http://www.binditall.com - interesting option for double-O binding!

Random

http://tonysthouse.com/ - Okay, I'm posting this because I love Tony's T Houses -- wouldn't it be dreamy to have one of these as a studio space?  Probably need the "wide" one or even double it, but it would be soooo cool as a studio and gallery space -- in some mild climate, of course.  Anyway, dreamy!

http://www.eloisewebsite.com/ -  Well, okay, this is really random, but when you ask me just for links I love, there is no way in heck I'm leaving Eloise off this list!  She is the reason I'm still in love with the Plaza and having tea at the Palm Court.  And just the art of these books -- inspires me!

Introduction...Mother Henna's Blogging Story

Mothersblog_screenshot_600pix_72d_2By Way of Introduction

I'm very excited to be here hosting this week!   My name is Kara L.C. Jones and I'm the founder of the 1,000 Faces of Mother Henna project.  Thought I'd start off by sharing my blogging story with you, so here goes:

Blogging wasn't something I came to very willingly at first.  Having been a website designer since old school days, blogs made no sense to me.  I couldn't figure out how people navigated, found archived materials, and definitely did not see how people connected directly with each other.  I still had the linear sight of a static website, you know?

Anyway as 2006 ended, I had a crisis of faith whereby I could not shake wondering what in the world my life meant.  This was more than goal setting and making resolutions.  At first, I thought I'd take a vow of silence for year as a way to demonstrate for peace.  But that was so impractical it wasn't even funny really.  So in searching for projects about peace, I came upon the Jizos For Peace project down at the Great Vow monastery.  It knocked me off my feet to read that they had collected up over 400,000 handmade pieces of art for their visual demonstration of peace.  Around the same time, I picked up an issue of Cloth Paper Scissors that featured Violette's art work including some of her whimsical people drawings which I just adore!

And, so, Wa-La!  I put it together and decided to make my vow to create 1,000 pieces of art,  each incorporating some element of a henna-style design and a face, with the express intention of putting peace and beauty into the world. The 1,000 Faces of Mother Henna project was born!  At first I was creating the pieces and just sharing them with my partner and a few friends.  People began to react so strongly to some of the work that it became obvious there would be a wider audience if I just floated the pieces out there.  We launched a very basic, little website -- which is great, but felt too static from the start.  Pretty quickly others were asking for prints or cards or stickers.  My good friend Lynndee of Lebeau Creative Design introduced me to Etsy.  As I combed the Etsy forums to learn about the Etsyian world, I noticed that many artists also had blogs.  I began reading.  Stumbling on the link daisy chain from one blog to another.  Leaving comments, getting convo messages back in my Etsy account from the artist-bloggers.  I was hooked!

Mothersetsy_screenshot_600pix_72dpi Not long after that, I launched my Mother Henna Etsy shop.  Sometimes in my item descriptions, I would end up doing very long write ups because I wanted to tell the story of the piece, the background, the process.  Often in the telling of these stories, I wanted to include links and highlight things with formatting, but you can't do that in the item editor there.  So I took a big deep breath and began zooming around Blogger.  I had sort of launched the blog with a few entries, but never had I looked at formatting the template, customizing the page elements, keeping an external account for photos (I use PictureTrail), integrating mini-Etsy, using FeedBurner so people could subscribe to the blog.  Wow, wow, wow!  This was getting fun :)

As you can guess -- given that I'm here being a guest host this week -- this delve into blogging completely opened up my world.  If it was Lynndee who showed me the light at Etsy, then it was definitely my friend Ang at Alter My World who showed me the blogging way.  Even though we were on different platforms for blogging, she was showing me how blogs function socially, can act as an online exhibits of art, be homebase for swaps and round robins and become a classroom for learning new techniques.  She continues to inspire me every single day!

The blog for 1,000 Faces started slowly, you know, just a few posts a month at first.  But as things unfolded with the project, and as I got comfortable with blogging, my entries picked up steam in number and in content.  Now, my old school days are long gone, and I am loving every minute of the blogosphere!!  I want to thank Melba for giving me the space here this week to share here at justBeConnected.  Hope to hear from you, too!  And I'll wrap up by sharing a few of the Faces themselves:

More very soon... in the meantime, if you want a Creative Spark, here's a challenge:  Make a piece about peace!!!  In an effort to create a community around peace and art, we extended the idea of the 1,000 Faces by opening up "A Peace Of..." blog -- and now we invite you to share a piece of your peace with us!
Miracles to you!

Hi Everybody and Happy Saturday!!!!

******OPEN MIC will be the first and last Saturday of the month so email your poems to me @ bookaddictionreview@gmail.com********

It's OPEN MIC today and we are highlighting the talent of Sword Mama.  So sit back relax and enjoy the words of Sword Mama ladies and gentlemen!!!!      (round of appalause)

If Only I Had A Dried Flower To Bleed Upon…

My candle's burned down; the smoke of my blood
sent off to the land of dreams
to awaken my lover who rests his head
upon cottonballs of hopes and desires
dreaming of the day when all will be one.

The dream begins… The waterfall cradled
by the full-mooned Goddess lies
frozen and crystallized.
Full-mooned Goddess awake with halo'd emotion
souly shines upon the frozen beard of Neptune
rays of inspiration and love giving her milky rays
wrapping herself around the cold loving.

I enter the dream. All alone this time.
My tears become the tide. I am the sea.

Three spririts together, of the Earth, back from the
dream
to the Earth again, cycling out cries to the sweet
cherub.

The waterfall needs to flow.
The Sun needs you, the waterfall needs to melt and flow
again by the warmth of our love.
The full-mooned Goddess needs to milk into the tide of
emotion.

My blood calls out to you sweet cherub whoever you
may be inside me.

sponsorship

I am thinking about selling sponsorships on justBeBrave and justBeConnected.

The cost would be $30 for 30 days to place a badge on both sites.

I am calling it sponsorship, because I don't think of it as an advertisement...really the money I get will help me continue hosting collaborative blogs and being able to connect like-spirited souls!

I don't feel the badges would make sense on my personal blog; Be Alive Believe Be You or my blog-store; justBeAltered or my home~base blog; Melba McMullin.

Yes I have 5 blogs! Actually I have a link blog too that you might have seen on your stat page, but I don't list it anymore because I don't want anyone to feel left out.

What do you think?

Do you care if I sell sponsorships for jBC and jBB?

Do you now or have you ever purchased advertising?

Any advice for me?

I would love your feedback either here in the comments or you can email me.

Thank you! XO, Melba

Grateful Challenge & Goodbye, for now...

It has been fun being your hostess this week on justBeConnected!

In closing, I have a few thoughts... I often look at life as the glass is half full.  I may not go on a lot of vacations in the near future, have new furniture, or the newest gadgets, but my life will be filled with love and happiness.

Additionally, do you ever look back on a day, a week, a month, or a year and try to learn lessons from those days?  I often do.  So, these are my lessons from this week:

  1. Get your annual flu shot.  Okay, so I never have gotten a flu shot and I have never had the flu before until this past week.
  2. Be prepared.  I was glad that I had already jotted down some ideas for this week's hostess event otherwise I would have been stumped between my splitting headache and the sweltering fever.
  3. Be happy to step aside and accept help (at times).  Thankfully, we had my parents in town to help with the kiddos' birthday - make cakes, wrap presents, take them to toddler gymnastics... all the things that a mom would want to do when she doesn't have a fever.

On my blog, I rarely talk about some of the difficult times in life.  Why?  Mainly because I just don't tell a lot of people about that... However, I read a post yesterday and realized maybe you want to know more... and not just the warm fuzzies about life. So, here are five things I haven't told many people (and now they are on the web for all to see - yikes!)

  1. I struggled with infertility for 2 years and it sucked!  To learn more about infertility go to Resolve
  2. Pregnancy discrimination is real and it is a horrible situation to have to put up with!
  3. I am divorced... my hubby is my second husband and it was worth the journey!
  4. The doctor was right... magnesium sulfate really does feel like an 18-wheeler just ran you over.  (Magnesium Sulfate is given via IV and is used in extreme cases to treat pre-term labor.)
  5. It is scary to have to see your 6 month old baby go through an ultrasound, CT Scan, and an MRI.  (Luckily, what the doctors thought was wrong, wasn't.)

My life isn't all roses, but I also know I have a lot to be thankful for, which gets me to my final challenge...

My final challenge to you is to create a piece through photos, art, or written word stating what you are grateful for.

Be sure to post your link in the comments.

Thank you, again, to Melba for allowing me this opportunity to be your hostess this week!

Also, be sure to check out Melba's other blog... justBeBrave"justBeBrave is a home created for indie artists to share their experiences, a place for indie artist to promote themselves and a resource of links for indie artists."

Getting to Know you Challenge

Thank you for all the good vibes... it must be working because today is the first day in a nearly a week I haven't had a fever!  Also, I am not as light and sound sensitive...oh both of those gave me a horrendous headache  Yeah!  I still can't talk, but at least I have the computer.  :)

As I would like to get to know you all better, my challenge today is to show me something that "represents" you.  It could be a picture, a written piece, an artwork... it is totally up to you!  Be creative and imaginative.  Post your link in the comments and thank you for participating!

Mine is our refrigerator... it is a collage, per say, of our family and friends and, of course, lots of pictures of the kiddos.

P.S. I am going to post some pictures of the kiddos birthday on my blogI can't help it... I am a proud mommy!
